Step By Step Instructions for Purchasing
a Domain Name
For a New or Existing Web Site
Step 1: Find a domain name
A domain name, such as jhwebworksdomains.com, will be your own address
on the Internet. No one may ever hold identical domain names, so it is a
unique identifier of you or your company. This is how your customers will
remember and find you among all the other Web sites.
Try to keep it simple and to the point. You may like to purchase your own
name (i.e. www.JohnDoe.com), which can be used for anything. If you don't
have a business purpose for this name now, but it is available, you may
want to get it as there is only one in the world and you probably want to
have control of it if you can.
Check
for availability and register up to 300 domain names at once with the
same registration information. This process simple and friendly.
Step 2: Register your name
This is a very simple process. If you currently have an account with jhwebworksdomains.com,
you be able to log in after you find the perfect name.
If you are new to our service, you will be asked to register before you
checkout.
Please Note: Your username and password must be at least 6 characters and
your password cannot be the same as your username. Also, usernames and passwords
are case sensitive.
Step 3: Modify Contact Information
You will be asked to enter contact information for Registrant, Administrative
Contact, Technical Contact and Billing Contact. If you are purchasing a
domain for a personal web site or a sole proprietor type business, these
can all be the same person. If you are purchasing a domain for a company
that may have different people to be these contacts, here is what you need
to know about what these contacts might have to do.
- Registrant: This is the owner of the domain. It would be the
individual in the case of a personal web site or sole proprietor type
business. In the case of a larger company, it might be the CEO, President
or another official who is entitled to act on behalf of that company.
- Administrative Contact: This is perhaps the most important contact
as they will approve any changes to the domain. Make sure this person
will be at the company for a long time to come if at all possible. It
is also important to use an email address that will be accessible for
a long time in the future. If this person and/or the email address changes,
it is important to log into your account and update it.
- Technical Contact: This is often the person who hosts your web
site. It can also be someone internal to your company like an IT person
or someone who is technical and/or familiar with your web hosting situation.
- Billing Contact: This is the second most important contact. This
would be the person who will receive the the billing notification every
year to renew your domain. Make sure this person will be at the company
for a long time to come if at all possible. It is also important to use
an email address that will be accessible for a long time in the future.
If this person and/or the email address changes, it is important to log
into your account and update it. If you don't renew your domain name on
time, you risk having to pay a substantial penalty fee to get it back
once it has gone past the renewal date. Worse that that, you may lose
it to someone else after it has been released for anyone to buy it.
Step 4: Modify Name Servers
Each domain name must be associated with a minimum of two name servers
(primary and secondary). A domain name may be associated with as many as
twelve secondary name servers.
By default, the name server is set to ns1.nameresolve.com, ns2.nameresolve.com,
ns3.nameresolve.com and ns4.nameresolve.com for convenience of those that
plan to have their domain or email forwarded, or if you just want to park
your domain for the time being.
If you plan to use this domain name with web hosting you already have,
you will have to get the name servers from the company that is hosting your
site.
If you will be hosting with jhWebWorks, our parent company, please contact
them for the name servers you will need for your domain.
If you are not sure what to do or what name servers you will be using,
simply leave them set to the default servers, ns1.nameresolve.com, ns2.nameresolve.com,
ns3.nameresolve.com and ns4.nameresolve.com. You can log into your account
and change them at any time. Your domain will be pointed to a "Coming
Soon" page in the meantime.
Step 5: Enter Billing Information
Be sure to fill out all of the information and always double check to verify
that you have the correct card type and expiration date. You will receive
a confirmation and have the opportunity to print it out. Please keep a copy
in a safe place for future reference.
Step 6: (OPTIONAL) URL Forwarding
You have the capability to forward your URL (domain name) to any site you
have approval to do so. Many times ISP's (internet service providers) give
their customers personal web space to put up a web page. Typically they
do not let you have your URL associated with it. You have probably seen
obscure web addresses like www.realpages.net/member/~johndoe/. For a small
fee, you can have your URL forwarded so that when someone goes to www.yourname.com
they are taken to the site of your choice.
This feature is available for all domain names registered at this site
and is very simple to do. Just go to jhwebworksdomains.com,
click on Account Access and login. This will take you to your account management
tool. Once there, select the URL Forwarding link. You will then be prompted
to select the name you wish to forward. At that time you can verify that
your name servers are set to ns1.nameresolve.com, ns2.nameresolve.com, ns3.nameresolve.com,
and ns4.nameresolve.com. This will enable the URL Forwarding to direct the
appropriate traffic to your web site.
Step 7: (OPTIONAL) Email Forwarding
You have the capability to forward your email to an existing email account.
